Indonesia spearheads in global initiatives to address sustainable development issue

Indonesian demonstrates full commitment towards the efforts to preserve the environment in global movement to design institutional framework that addresses sustainable development.

Hosting a high profile meeting attended by officials from more than 100 countries and representatives from the United Nations (UN) bodies, major groups and NGOs concerning the sustainable development issue, Indonesia marked its persistent stance to lead countries in addressing global green agenda with "Solo Messages" communique.

The communique approved by all officials taking part in the meeting was resulted from the meeting entitled "The High Level Dialogue on The Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development (HLD IFSD)" held in Indonesia's city of Solo, Central Java ended on Thursday.

Indonesian Environmental Affairs Minister Gusti Muhammad Hatta said that the Solo Messages comprised of seven points of conducts that need to be addressed so as to create a well-designed institutional framework in addressing sustainable development issue in the world.

"There should be a dynamic interaction and coherence between global, regional, national and local levels. In this regard, the need for more coherence in support for national strategies was noted, including references to delivering as one," the minister said in his remarks to close the meeting dubbed as Solo Meeting.

The Solo Messages highlights the global need to renew political commitment for sustainable development and translate the commitment into implementation, the need to ensure that the economic, social and environmental pillars work together with each pillar integrating the goals of the other two pillars.

Besides that, at international level, there is a need to establish an organization tasked to enhance the integration of sustainable development, the minister said.

He added that broader mandate need to be applied to international agencies and UN bodies tasked to review the implementation of sustainable development drive in countries in the world.

Citing to the last point of the Solo Messages, the minister also reminded the importance to provide new and additional funds to finance the capacity building efforts and technology transfer so as to succeed the implementation of sustainable development drive that pays attention on environmental issue.

The results of the Solo meeting and the "Solo Messages" would be conveyed to UN Conference on Sustainable Development, or popularly known as Rio+20 Conference set for June 2012 in Rio De Janeiro Brazil.

The result of Solo Meeting was highly praised by Sha Zukang, Under-Secretary-General For Economic And Social Affairs, Secretary- General Of The 2012 United Nations Conference On Sustainable Development (UNCSD).

He said that after went through direct discussions among officials in the meeting, the draft to create institutional framework addressing sustainable development has become clear.

He added that the meeting proves Indonesia's leadership in global efforts to comply with international environment agendas.
