The United States is pleased to see Georgia's parliamentary elections, State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey said on Thursday.

"We were pleased to see that the elections in general proceeded in a positive manner," Casey told reporters.

However, the spokesman noted that the United States is still assessing the elections, which was believed to be a critical test for a close U.S. ally that is seeking NATO membership.

Georgia started its parliamentary elections Wednesday with Georgia's ruling United National Movement party leading in the elections with a wide margin. Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has claimed victory for his party, according to reports reaching here from Tbilisi.

The United States supports effort by Georgia to join NATO.
