The wife of U.S. presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, Michelle, said on Wednesday that she has written a thank-you note to the First Lady, Laura Bush, for defending in public her controversial remarks in a campaign rally.
"There's a reason why people like (the First Lady)," Mrs. Obama said during an interview with the ABC TV program. "She doesn't fuel the fire."
Mrs. Obama has been under fire since February after she said at a campaign rally "for the first time in my adult lifetime I am really proud of my country," inviting criticism and doubts about her patriotism.
She reiterated her pride in the country in the ABC's "The View," and clarified her remarks as referring to being proud of the political process this year.
Married to a Republican president, Laura Bush told ABC's "Good Morning America" that she believed Mrs. Obama's remarks must have been misinterpreted.
"I think she probably meant, 'I'm more proud.'" she said. "Everything you say is looked at and in many cases misconstrued."
On Mrs. Bush's comment, Mrs. Obama said that she was touched and sent her a thank-you note, but she did not disclose any details because it might have not been delivered.
