Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Tuesday expressed strong support for his Bolivian counterpart Evo Morales who called a recall referendum pitting himself against opposition governors.
Morales' election as president in Bolivia was "the most significant in Latin America," said Lula, speaking soon after assuming the rotating presidency of the Common Market of the Southat the group's summit in the northern Argentine city of San Miguelde Tucuman.
"The Bolivian native people who were subdued for 500 years and treated as if they were from third the category, chose one among them to govern them," the Brazilian leader said.
Lula said Morales' election as president was the result of the "peoples' wisdom," urging Morales to have "the necessary patience to work calmly because our enemies expect to make us nervous."
Morales called the referendum in response to the votes for autonomy in the four provinces of Santa Curz, Tarija, Pando and Beni this year.
In the recall voting, Bolivians will vote to decide whether Morales and Vice President Ivaro Garcia Linera will continue in their posts.
