A 7-year-old American girl was killed in a drive-by shooting in Salt Lake City, according to media reports Monday.
The shooting took place around 6:30 p.m. Sunday while the girl, who was an innocent bystander, was playing outside of her home. A black SUV pulled up and fired shots; the girl was shot in the chest and died at the scene.
Witnesses said they heard numerous gunshots but police have not confirmed how many were fired.
Authorities said the shooting was likely a result of gang threats that stem from an altercation earlier in the day.
Police said they are familiar with the gang members and know one of them by name.
The black SUV was found by police. Searching for the suspect is continuing.
