Mexican President Felipe Calderon appointed Wednesday Gerardo Ruiz Mateos as the new minister of economy with a view to battling inflation.
Ruiz, former chief of the Presidency Bureau, replaced outgoing Eduardo Sojo Garza-Aldape, who was named as president of the governmental council of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).
The main mission of the new minister is to support the Mexican economy and battle inflation and the hike of food prices, Calderon told reporters.
Ruiz had talks with businessmen after the appointment in order to design strategies, Calderon said.
Other tasks for Ruiz are to promote investment "with the aim of boosting the economic activity and to produce job opportunities needed by Mexicans," according to the president.
Ruiz is well prepared for assuming his new responsibilities and with the arrival of Sojo in the INEGI, the country will be able to make better decisions, Calderon said.
