Mexican President Felipe Calderon called an urgent meeting of the National Public Security Council (CNSP) on Thursday in view of the recent wave of violence and kidnappings in the country.

The president urged his security cabinet to respond to the demands of Mexicans regarding the issue.

Calderon said his government has the will to support its citizens, listen their just complaints and reinforce the effort to defeat delinquency in Mexico.

The CNSP is made up of federal, state and municipal authorities as well as civilian organizations.

Calderon's call comes a day after the rights organization Mexico United against Delinquency urged authorities to take action against the violence.

During a press conference Wednesday, Mexico United president Maria Elena Moreira called for a national offensive against the rampant violence and kidnapping.

Mexico City mayor Marcelo Ebrard recently also invited governors of the 31 Mexican states to unite against violent crime.

According to Mexican media, violence in the country has killed at least 2,100 people this year.
