The United States said on Friday that it has offered Cuba humanitarian aid for its citizens affected by Hurricane Gustav.
"The U.S. government did inform the Cuban government on Sept. 3that we are prepared to provide immediate humanitarian assistance to Cuban citizens affected by Hurricane Gustav," State Department spokeswoman Joanne Moore told reporters.
"This is a response to a humanitarian emergency and the U.S. government has long supported humanitarian effort on behalf of the Cuban people."
The United States made the offer through non-government channels and is yet to know the response from Cuba, according to the spokeswoman.
Hurricane Gustav with winds of 205 km per hour swept through Cuba late last week, having inflicted many injuries and grave damages.
The United States and Cuba has been hostile to each other since the Cuban Revolution in 1959.
