Cuba to go on supporting Haiti's reconstruction

Cuba will go on supporting the reconstruction in Haiti, which was devastated by a major earthquake on Jan. 12, Ramon Pez Ferro, president of the International Relations Committee of the National Assembly of People's Power (Parliament), said Thursday.

"We reaffirm our decision to do everything we can to further promote the solidarity of Cuba and the rest of the world with the reconstruction of Haiti," Pez Ferro said at a parliament gathering.

The official stressed "the need to keep appealing to the infinite flow of humanitarian feelings and solidarity of Cubans to continue helping the Haitian brothers."

The Parliament International Relations Committee is analyzing important issues related with Cuba's world relations as part of the preliminary meetings from Wednesday to Saturday before the regular parliament sessions start on Sunday.

Boris Luis Rodriguez Garcia, expert from the Center for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean, gave to the attending deputies an overview of the current socioeconomic and political situation in Haiti.

He stressed that financial deficit, a poverty rate of 80 percent and an illiteracy of 41.1 percent were some of the main difficulties that Haiti faced even before the quake.

The International Relations Committee discussed on Wednesday the work of the Cuban Parliament in the international arena and the influence of the UN in solving the most acute international problems.
