Brazil, Japan sign social security agreement

Brazil and Japan signed on Thursday an agreement that exempts their citizens from double taxation of social security in both countries when living as immigrants.

In order to enjoy benefits from the agreement, the Brazilian citizens should pay taxes to the Japanese social security system while working in the country. The same benefits will also apply to the Japanese citizens working in Brazil.

Under the agreement, the Brazilian and Japanese social security systems will have access to the workers' information from both countries.

The agreement has yet to be approved by the parliaments of both countries.

Brazil and Japan have a long history of mutual immigration. The Brazilian authorities estimated that some 80,000 Japanese live and work in the country, while some 300,000 Brazilians currently live in Japan.
