At least six guerrillas and two Colombian soldiers died in a combat in a rural area of western Cauca province, the Colombian Army said in a statement on Sunday.

The combat began on Friday with "joint operations carried out by the National Army and the Colombian Air Forces in the municipalities of Caloto and Toribio."

"Six members" of the rebel Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) were killed, 12 were injured and four went missing, "all from the 4th squad of the FARC," the army statement said, adding "two soldiers were killed and four injured."

Established in 1964, the FARC is the oldest, largest and most powerful rebel group in Colombia.
