The Fifth Avenue of New York City witnessed a sea of green on Thursday as the 250th annual St. Patrick's Day Parade attracted spectators from around the globe.

More than two million spectators lined up along the Fifth Avenue to watch the parade march up from 44th Street at 11 a.m. until East 79th Street instead of the traditional finish line at East 86th Street. The city has shortened the parade route to save money on police overtime.

The parade, which celebrates Irish culture and heritage, featured scores of bagpipers, marching bands and city officials including NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

"The parade is truly an international celebration. It is so amazing to see that here in New York City everyone is a little bit Irish today. Brilliant," Mary Cohen, a British visitor told Xinhua.

St. Patrick's Day is a religious holiday celebrated internationally on March 17. It is named after Saint Patrick, the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland. The day is generally characterized by the attendance of church services, wearing of green attire and the lifting of Lenten restrictions on fasting and drinking.
