U.S. imposes sanctions on Syrian entity, official

The U.S. imposed sanctions on a security entity and a military official of Syria for their alleged roles in clamping down protests in the country, the U.S. Treasury Department announced on Wednesday.

The Treasury accused Syria's Political Security Directorate of opening fire on and killing demonstrators in protests in Dara in mid-March and in Nawa in April.

The department also designated Jamil Hassan, head of Syrian air force intelligence, in the sanctions, for his support to the Syrian government on the crackdown.

In addition, the Treasury included Iran's law enforcement forces and its chief and deputy chief, Ismail Ahmadi Moghadam and Ahmad-Reza Radan, in the new sanctions for their aid to the Syrian government's effort to crack down the protests.

The new sanctions froze any assets of those listed targets on the U.S. soil and forbid any U.S. company and person from dealings with them.

In May, U.S. President Barack Obama ordered sanctions against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, his deputy, the prime minister and several other senior government officials.
