Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva on Friday hailed the awarding of this year's Nobel Peace Prize to former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
"This prize acknowledges the merit of those awarded for their concern about the importance to fight against climate changes," Cavaco said in a statement.
He said the climate challenge should be faced equally by all individual people, enterprises as well as countries in the world.
The president called for adherence to the Kyoto protocol, saying that it is time to turn to clean and renewable energies.
Gore, as an important ecological activist, has written two books on problems caused by climate changes. "An inconvenient truth," a film made according to one of Gore's books, won an "Oscar" best documentary award from the U.S. film academy in February.
