At least 22 people have been arrested on children abuse charges in Canada's Ontario province during the largest child pornography investigation in the province's history, police said Tuesday.
The suspects were arrested Monday during raids carried out by Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) across the province, OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino told a news conference in Toronto.
Most of the offenders are males, with their ages ranging from 20 to 64. One female has been charged, as has one young offender, he said.
According to a new U.S. study, Canada ranks fourth in the word in on-line child pornography distribution activity, following Bermuda, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
A U.S. task force found that about 45,000 computers across the nation are involved in child porn trading, with about one-third of those in Ontario.
About 30 percent of those who view such imagery go on to commit sexual offenses against children, according to the U.S. data.
