Russian President Dmitry Medvedev hopes that the Russia-EU summit in Khanty-Mansiisk will enhance Moscow's ties with Brussels, the Interfax news agency reported Friday.

"We would like to move forward in order to add a fresh impetus to our relations," Medvedev was quoted as saying in the opening remarks at the Russia-EU summit.

Moscow feels "the need to coordinate effort along with the European Union (EU) to repel the threats and challenges that are getting more and more acute and to combat the trend of growing conflict potential in the world," the president said.

Medvedev appreciated EU's efforts to overcome internal disputes and secure a mandate to begin talks on a new basic agreement with Russia, saying the summit is "a good chance to continue the dialogue on strategic relationships."

Leaders from Russia and the EU are meeting Friday as part of the Russia-EU summit in Khanty-Mansiisk. They are expected to lay the groundwork for talks on a long overdue new strategic partnership agreement.

Prime Minister Janez Jansa of Slovenia, which currently holds the rotating EU presidency, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana are taking part in the session.
