The European Commission has expressed its sympathy to the families of the victims of Wednesday's Madrid plane crash, which killed 153 people.
"I am deeply saddened by the loss of life caused by this tragic plane crash. On my own behalf and that of the European Commission, I would like to express our condolences to all those affected and to the Spanish authorities. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims," said European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso in a statement released Thursday.
European Commissioner Joaquin Almunia of Spain, and Antonio Tajani, the Commission's vice president responsible for transport, joined Barroso in expressing their personal condolences.
The air crash in Madrid occurred at the International Airport of Barajas at 2:45 p.m. local time (1245 GMT), when an MD-82 jet shot off the runway at terminal four and caught fire at takeoff. The airplane was totally destroyed and most of the dead were burned beyond recognition.
The accident has become one of the worst aerial disasters at the International Airport of Barajas in the last 25 years.
