In the face of lower gas supplies, the European Union should intensify its moves designed to diversify sources of raw materials, Polish President Lech Kaczynski said on Tuesday.

That is the lesson that should be learnt from what has happened, the president said, referring to the Russian-Ukrainian gas conflict.

Poland's plans to import raw materials from "the south-eastern direction" from Azerbaijan to the Gdansk port should be implemented very fast, Polish news agency PAP quoted the president as saying.

The president stressed that EU's today policy towards Russia "had not produced any results." The EU should be firmer in relations with our Russian partner, Kaczynski said.

Meanwhile, the Polish government adopted a directive on possible limitations of gas supplies to industry. There will be no limitations in supplies to private consumers, Economy Minister Waldemar Pawlak said.

"Today there are no supply limitations for any group of consumers," Pawlak told a conference after a Cabinet sitting.

"This directive offers a possibility for flexible crisis responding, without introducing any limitations in gas supplies to households," Pawlak stressed.

Russia turned off natural gas supplies to Ukraine on Jan. 1 after the two nations failed to reach an agreement on gas prices for 2009. That has resulted in downsizing gas supplies to other European countries, which has already affected Bulgaria, Poland and Romania.
