Backgrounder: Major bombings and shootings in Europe in recent years

A bomb explosion in the Norwegian capital of Oslo and subsequent shootings on a nearby island Friday killed at least 91 people. The following are major bombings and shootings in Europe in recent years:

On Nov. 27, 2009, a bomb derailed a high-speed express train between Moscow and St. Petersburg, killing 27 and leaving more than 100 hurt.

On Dec. 31, 2009, a gunman went on a shooting rampage in southern Finland, killing five people at a suburban shopping center before fatally shooting himself.

On March 29, 2010, two blasts in Moscow subway stations Lubyanka and Park Kultury killed 40 and injured more than 90.

On June 2, 2010, 12 people were killed and at least 25 injured after a gunman carried out a series of shootings in Cumbria, northern England.

On Aug. 30, 2010, seven people were killed and 13 were seriously injured in a shooting incident in the Slovak capital Bratislava. The gunman committed suicide after the shooting.

On Dec. 11, 2010, two cars exploded in downtown Stockholm, capital of Sweden, killing one person and injuring two.

On Jan. 24, 2011, a terrorist bomb at Moscow's Domodedovo airport killed 36 people and injured nearly 200 others.

On March 2, 2011, a gunman from Kosovo attacked a bus carrying U.S. soldiers at Germany's Frankfurt airport, killing two people and injuring two others.

On April 9, 2011, a 25-year-old gunman killed seven people, including himself, and injured 16 in a shooting spree at a shopping center in a town about 30 km southwest of Amsterdam.

On April 11, 2011, 12 people were killed and about 200 were injured in a blast that struck the Oktyabrskaya metro station in the Belarussian capital Minsk.

On July 11, 2011, a massive explosion wrecked a naval base on the south coast of Cyprus and destroyed a nearby power station that supplyied more than half the country's electricity. The blast killed 13 people and injured more than 60.
