The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) dropped a proposed resolution against Iran Tuesday, due to differences among members.

An unidentified Western diplomat said Britain, France and Germany withdrew the draft resolution, which was due to be discussed by the IAEA's board of governors.

The United States and the European Union had hoped the UN nuclear watchdog would pass the resolution after the UN Security Council imposed new sanctions against Iran in order to step up political pressure on the Islamic republic.

The draft resolution apparently urged Iran to further cooperate with the IAEA to clarify its nuclear research program, suspend its uranium enrichment activities and allow an in-depth international probe into its nuclear program.

Diplomats said Russia and other countries viewed the proposed resolution as unnecessary in the wake of a UN Security Council decision.

Cuban Ambassador Norma Goiochea Estenoz said an IAEA resolution against Iran "will ruin the existing atmosphere of cooperation and mutual trust between Iran and IAEA."
