Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri on Wednesday said that a national unity government should be formed soon, and urged all parties to cooperate in this direction, local New TV reported.
Berri made the call after meeting President Michel Suleiman, whom he defended saying "We want the president to stay a consensus, and no one should impose any conditions on him."
He dismissed the demand that a sovereign ministry should be formed as an illusion, noting that all ministers in the cabinet have the same importance.
Meanwhile, he highlighted the importance and urgency to solve the three difficulties that are now plaguing Lebanon, which are the sectarian conflicts and the security situation, the surge of prices due to the absence of a cabinet and high fuel prices, as well as the danger posed by the Israeli presence.
It is now into the third week since President Michel Suleiman assigned Premier Fouad Seniora to form a new cabinet, but the Lebanese leaders are still unable to reach an agreement that allows the cabinet to be formed accordingly.
The Doha accord reached on May 21 called for the election of president Suleiman, the formation of a national unity government and the adoption of 1960 election law. Source: Xinhua
