A senior Hamas leader said on Saturday that possibilities of launching inter-Palestinian dialogue have been retreated due to opposition from Western powers.
"The chance of a Palestinian-Palestinian dialogue," which is intended to repair the political gap between the West Bank and the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, now "returned to zero," said the Gaza-based leader Mahmoud Zahar.
"There is no dialogue now because the officials in Ramallah are unable to do so due to the American-European veto," he said.
Last month, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who formed a government ruling in the West Bank, said he was ready to talk to Hamas which routed his forces and took control of the Gaza Strip in fierce fighting in 2007.
But a conference to support pro-Abbas forces held in Berlin on June 14 "revealed the Western veto on the internal Palestinian dialogue because it demands Hamas and the other factions to recognize the conditions of the (Middle East) Quartet," Zahar said.
"Hamas and the Palestinian factions reject the Quartet conditions," Zahar said, referring to the demands of recognizing Israel, renouncing violence and accepting peace treaties.
The Quarter of Middle East comprises the United States, the European Union (EU), Russia and the United Nations.
