Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit has warned against any military attacks on Iran for solving its disputed nuclear program, a press release of the ministry said Wednesday.
In an interview with the Egyptian Nile TV channel, Abul Gheit expressed his doubt over the effectiveness of military strikes against Iran, said the press release.
Referring to a possible Israeli military strike against Iran, Abul Gheit said it will not succeed if Israel takes unilateral action and may cause heavy losses for Israel and the region as a whole.
The West should try to find a solution to the Iranian nuclear issue through political and diplomatic settlement, said Abul Gheit, adding Iran has the right to have a peaceful nuclear program.
Mark Regev, spokesman of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, said Monday that the international community should upgrade the diplomatic efforts to stop Iranian nuclear program.
However, Regev reiterated that "all options are on the table" to stop Iran's nuclear ambition, saying that "Israel can deal effectively with the threat that we face."
Iran and the West have been engaged in dispute over Tehran's nuclear program. Tehran claims it is enriching uranium to produce new power, while the West believes it is developing nuclear weapons.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has not ruled out a military strike against Iran's nuclear program if it is deemed necessary, but he has said that diplomatic solutions should be executed to keep Tehran from becoming a nuclear power.
In 1981, Israel destroyed an unfinished Iraqi nuclear reactor in a surprise air attack.
