Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Thursday urged Muslim nations to break silence on the humanitarian tragedy unfolding in the Gaza Strip.

Khamenei urged Muslim governments to break their silence and stand up to Israeli "despotism" in the region, Iran's satellite channel Press TV reported.

They "will eventually regret their doom-laden silence on Israel's aggression in the region," he added.

The Iranian supreme leader said Israel waged war on Gaza to root out regional resistance movements and advance its political agenda, but the Israeli drive "will come to naught."

"It is most evident that Israel's incursion into the Gaza Strip was primarily designed to reinforce Tel Aviv's grip on the resource-rich Middle East," he said.

Khamenei asserted even if Israel manages to overcome the Hamas resistance movement, it would never weaken the strong resolve of Palestinians.

"New resistance movements will emerge in the region as key shaping forces and will eventually deal a heavy blow to Israel," he said.

So far, 715 Palestinians were killed and 3,100 wounded since the beginning of the Israeli military offensive on the Gaza Strip in Dec. 27.
