The Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) on Tuesday rescued two unnamed Polish tourists after they were kidnapped in Baalbek by two members of the Jaafar family notorious for their businesses in drugs and weapons, the local MTV channel reported.
One of the kidnappers, identified as Rached Rida Jaafar, was killed by the LAF, while the other perpetrator is still on the loose, said the report, without elaborating further.
The Bekaa-based Jaafar family clashed with the LAF in April. In 2009, three members of the family were arrested over a deadly ambush on a military patrol.
Located in the Bekaa Valley in northeastern Lebanon, Baalbeck is famous for its well-preserved ancient Hellenistic and Roman religious sites.
