Ahtisaari was last week awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to build a lasting peace, from Africa and Asia to Europe and the Middle East.

A statement from the Green Belt Movement said Maathai particularly applauded Ahtisaari's achievement in the Horn of Africa, especially in Namibia.

"I want to join the world in celebrating today President Ahtisaari for the work he has done over the years on different continents. I am particularly thinking of the wonderful work he did in Namibia and the Horn of Africa," said Maathai.

She also congratulated the Nobel Peace Committee for their excellent choice for this years Prize.

She said the former President Ahtisaari has devoted a large part of his life and his diplomatic expertise working to restore peace.

"It is a great honor to welcome him to the Nobel Peace Laureate family. We wish him every success in his work ahead," Maathai said.

Maathai is the founder of the Green Belt Movement and the 2004 Nobel Peace Laureate.

Over the years, she has campaigned tirelessly for democracy, human rights and environmental conservation. She is the Goodwill Ambassador to the Congo Forest Basin and a member of the Nobel Women's Initiative.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee chose Ahtisaari to receive the 1.4 million U.S. dollar prize from a field of 197 candidates "for his important efforts, on several continents and over more than three decades, to resolve international conflicts."
