An aid worker has been shot dead by unknown gunmen in the southern Somali town of Jamame, in Lower Jubba province, the latest in series of killing of humanitarian workers in the war-ravaged Horn of Africa country, local media reports said Sunday.
Mohamoud Mohamed Osman, local head of Mercy Corps aid agency in Jamame, 450 km south of Mogadishu, was gunned down as he left mosque after performing the evening prayers on overnight Saturday, local Shabelle Radio reported.
The gunmen, reportedly armed with pistols, escaped after killing the official who was the Program Coordinator of Mercy Corps in the town which is under the control of the Al-shabaab Islamist group.
In September, the group issued a ban on the operations of two International aid agencies and a warning to other aid agencies which they accused of being involved in what they termed as "anti-Islamic activities", but the movement, listed by Washington as a terrorist entity, said last month it rescinded its decision after pressure from locally revered clan elders.
