In the last one week, at least 7 people have been killed and others kidnapped by members of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) in different parts of Orientale province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), religious and civil society groups told Xinhua on Monday.

These sources indicated that LRA members had in the last few days intensified the harassement of civilian population. During the same time, they looted agricultural produce from farmers in Nangume and Gangala regions of Dungu territory.

Several localities and administrative posts in Dungu and Faradje were targets of LRA especially Ngilima administrative unit along Aba road in Faradje territory.

According to a priest at St. Kizito church in Ngilima who was quoted by these sources, three people were killed and large quantities of agricultural produce stolen during the invasion by the LRA rebels on July 10. They also abducted a young man who managed to escape from them later.

In the area along Aba-Isiro road, it was reported that a woman was seriously injured following cuts by machettes while three children were kidnapped by the Ugandan rebel group when they invaded the area.

According to information from Caritas/Isiro, some people whose number was not clearly specified, were killed last week in the locality along Aba-Isiro road by LRA members who also managed to kidnap youths. Efforts are being taken to ascertain the number of the abducted youths.

Sources from DR Congo 9th military region have confirmed these killings and abductions but affirmed that measures had been taken to prevent any eventual repeat attacks from the LRA rebels.
