UN Security Council slams attack on presidential palace in Somali capital

The UN Security Council on Tuesday condemned Monday's deadly attack on the presidential palace in the Somali capital of Mogadishu that resulted in the deaths of four peacekeepers of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

"The members of the Security Council reiterated their condemnation of all acts of violence and incitement to violence against civilians, AMISOM and the Transitional Federal Government, " said a press statement released here.

On Aug. 30, four Ugandan peacekeepers were killed as a mortar hit the presidential palace during the eight day of fighting in Mogadishu.

The Council expressed its strong condemnation of the recent deadly clashes and "stressed the importance of international assistance to train, equip and build the capacity of the Somali security forces and called upon the international community to provide additional resources to AMISOM in order for it to better fulfill its mandate."

The Islamist militant group Al Shabaab last week declared a full-fledged war against Somali government forces and AU peacekeeping troops based in the Somali capital.

Approximately 6,000 troops from Uganda and Burundi are currently deployed in Mogadishu as part of AMISOM.
