Gabon disbands main opposition party: media

Gabon on Wednesday disbanded its main opposition party, after the party leader Andre Mba Obame declared himself president and formed a parallel government on Tuesday, media reports quoted the country's interior ministry as saying.

Obame claimed that he won the presidential election held in August, 2009. The election was amid at finding the successor to the country's later president Omar Bongo Ondimba, who died in June, 2009.

Obame went third in the elections, according to official results declared by the Constitutional Court. Ali Bongo won with 41 percent of the votes cast while Obame got 25 percent.

In order to legitimize his power, Obame went to the United Nations offices on Monday night to hand over a list of members of his government.
