Zambian bus accident claims 32 lives

A total of 28 people were killed on the spot in eastern Zambia after a bus they were traveling in overturned while four died when they were being taken to a local hospital, a police spokesperson said here on Wednesday.
Ndandula Siamana told Xinhua that the accident, which involved a Zambia/Malawi bus that was traveling from Chipata, the provincial town in eastern Zambia, to Lusaka, the country's capital.
The bus, she said, was trying to overtake another vehicle when it hit into an on-coming truck, causing it to overturn.
She said the driver of the truck and another passenger were burnt to ashes in the process while the accident victims have been admitted in a local hospital.
The bus was carrying about 58 passengers.
Accidents are common in Zambia and are mainly caused by careless drivers and the poor state of roads.
According to the country's Road Safety Agency (RTSA), Zambia records about 1,200 road fatalities each year while 50,000 people are left "permanently injured".
Siamana, however, said more details on the accident will be released later.
