All the resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council have precluded the use of force to deal with Iran over its controversial nuclear issue, council president Vitaly Churkin said Tuesday.
In a press briefing on the 15-member body's work for March, the Russian Ambassador said that the council has adopted four resolutions concerning Iran's nuclear issue since 2006, with the first one sending a warning and the other three slapping sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
All the resolutions make clear that "there is no indication at all of any willingness of the Security Council in any form to sanction or approve or condone the use of force against Tehran in order to deal with the Iranian nuclear issue," he said.
The measures contained in the resolutions were adopted under article 41 of chapter 7 of the UN Charter, which "speaks exclusively of economic measures to influence the behavior of certain UN members," he said, adding that the council can only take additional measure under article 41 of chapter 7 even if Iran fails to comply with its demand.
The UN Security Council adopted resolution 1803 on Monday slapping stronger sanctions to press Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment activities.
