The president of the UN General Assembly and the current president of the UN Security Council met on Tuesday to discuss global issues, Jean Victor Nkolo, spokesman for the assembly president, told reporters on Wednesday.
General Assembly President Joseph Deiss and Li Baodong, the Chinese UN ambassador who holds the rotating Council president for March, acknowledged in their meeting the importance of coordination and interaction between the two major UN bodies, in addition to talking about issues facing the international community, Nkolo said at a news briefing.
"Both presidents discussed important regional issues focusing mainly on Libya, Cote d'Ivoire and Sudan," Nkolo said. "They exchanged views on global issues including the upcoming thematic debate on the green economy."
Nkolo said that the coordination and communication between the Security Council and the General Assembly remains important to the assembly's agenda.
"The president of the General Assembly holds regular meetings with the presidents of the principal organs of the United Nations, as provided for in the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly to ensure enhanced cooperation and coordination in the work programs, in accordance with their respective responsibilities under the UN Charter," Nkolo said.
