The international community should respect the right of developing countries to promote sustainable development and give them necessary policy space, a senior Chinese official told the 19th Session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development in the United Nations on Wednesday.

In his address to the meeting, Zheng Wantong, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference said that due to different national conditions and levels of development, countries should shoulder their own responsibilities, adopt strategies and measures suited to specific national situations, and promote achievement of sustainable development targets in areas such as sustainable production and consumption, mining and transport, etc.

"The international community should take full account of the national conditions of developing countries, respect their right to promote sustainable development, and give them necessary policy space," he noted.

For the part of the developed countries, Zheng said they should alter unsustainable modes of production and consumption, avoid massive consumption of resources and energy, fulfill their commitments of providing assistance, reducing debts and transferring technology as well as helping the developing countries to increase their capacity for sustainable development.

Concerning the management of chemicals and disposal of waste, Zheng called on the international community to strengthen policy incentives and institutional regulation, enhance coordination and cooperation in technical support so as to ensure the ecological security and public health.

"All stakeholders need to build on their common interests and shared responsibilities, give full play to their initiative and achieve the result of complementarity and mutual reinforcement," he said,

"The fruit of sustainable development and modern civilization should be shared by all countries and regions and people from all walks of life." Zheng pointed out that the Chinese government has all along followed the path of green development where man and nature coexist in harmony, pushed for balanced development of the world economy, and advocated inclusive and mutually beneficial development.

"China will continue to concentrate on scientific development, accelerate transformation of economic growth mode, adjust its economic structure, bolster scientific innovation, improve people' s livelihood and promote sustainable development, thus making positive contributions to the international endeavour for sustainable development," he said.
