International energy forum opens in Vienna

A UN-sponsored international energy forum opened here Tuesday with a call for universal access to modern energy services by 2030.
About 40 heads of state and ministerial officials are expected to join some 1000 experts, scholars, activists and other participants in the event, held under the auspices of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
During the three-day gathering, themed "energy for all, time for action," attendees will explore ways to ensure universal access to modern energy services and increase energy efficiency by reducing energy intensity by 40 percent by 2030.
"Without access to modern forms of energy, it is highly unlikely that any of the objectives of the Millennium Development Goals will be achieved," UNIDO Director General Kandeh Yumkella said at a press conference.
He said the world must be concerned about energy problems in poor areas, as three quarters of the global population use only 10 percent of the world's total energy consumption.
