Construction output in the eurozone picked up by 0.2 percent in May after a sharp decline in April, the European Union's statistics bureau Eurostat said on Wednesday. The seasonally adjusted data also gained 1.8 percent over one year ago in the 13-nation bloc sharing the same currency euro.
In April, production in the construction sector dropped by 1.2 percent month on month, but increased by 3.3 percent year on year. In the 27-nation EU, construction output also registered a monthly increase of 0.1 percent after a fall of 0.3 percent in April. It rose by 4.8 percent yearly. Among the member states for which data are available, construction output rose in seven member states, fell in four and remained stable in the Netherlands and Sweden. The largest increase was recorded in Slovenia, where construction output grew by 9.4 percent month on month in May. The largest decrease was registered in Romania, a monthly drop of 7.0 percent. Construction in Germany, the largest economy within the EU, gained 0.3 percent month on month in May. After decreases of 2.1 percent and 0.4 percent respectively in April, building construction rose by 0.5 percent in the euro zone and by 0.3 percent in the EU. Civil engineering fell by 0.7 percent in the euro zone and by 0. 9 percent in the EU, after a decrease of 0.2 percent in the euro zone and an increase of 0.5 percent in the EU in the previous month.
