Laos should seek new garment export markets, and strengthen the promotion of local products abroad, according to Laos' newspaper Vientiane Times on Monday.
"Niche markets and products are needed if the Lao garment industry envisions survival in the future ... potential new markets for Lao garments may be found in the United States and Asia. Japan may possibly offer a high potential niche market," said the newspaper.
The newspaper listed some facts that Lao garment and textile companies will face stronger competition in its key garment export markets.
It also said Lao garment manufacturers have enjoyed privileges under the Generalized System of Preferences from the European Union (EU) that allows them to export to the block with no tariffs. In 2005, garment exports to the EU accounted for 91 percent of total Lao garment exports.
