In 2008, a total of 15 one hundred million-ton oil and gas reservoirs were discovered and identified, with 1.34 billion tons in newly-added proven geological oil reserves and 647.2 billion cubic meters in newly-added natural gas, according to the "Communiqué on Land and Resources of China 2008" published by China's Ministry of Land and Resources.
The communiqué shows that in 2008, China's investment in geological exploration maintained a relatively high level and significant progress was made in geological ore prospecting.
Through geological explorations, a total of 209 large and medium-sized mineral deposits were discovered. Nine kinds of newly-added mineral reserves, including coal, natural gas and copper ore were remarkably increased. According to the communiqué the newly-added proven geological oil reserves total 1.34 billion tons, natural gas 647.2 billion cubic meters and raw coal 23.11 billion tons.
The communiqué also shows that the net decrease of arable area in China slowed down in 2008. The gross area of China's arable land stood at 1.82574 billion mu, a net decrease of 290,000 mu.
In 2008, a total of 2.874 million mu of arable land was used for construction purposes, 372,000 mu of arable land was destroyed by disaster, and 114,000 mu of farmland was converted into ecological land.
Structural adjustments in the agricultural sector led to a reduction of 374,000 mu in arable land. The above four factors combined have led to a decline of 3.734 million mu in arable land.
During the same period, reclamation and development activities nationwide have added 3.444 million mu of arable land.
