Tokyo stocks closed sharply higher Wednesday.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average advanced 162.31 points, or 1.16 percent, from Tuesday to 14,183.48.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange went up 6.83 points, or 0.49 percent, to 1,390.03.
Despite the rises in the key indexes, declining issues outnumbered advancing ones 851 to 718, with 156 others remaining unchanged on the First Section.
Trading volume on the main section rose to 2,164.43 million shares from Tuesday's 1,969.66 million.
The TSE's Second Section index lost 2.73 points, or 0.09 percent, to 2,976.82 on a volume of 43.21 million shares.
