California's unemployment rate rose to 11.5 percent in May, much higher than the national unemployment rate of 9.4 percent, the U.S. Department of Labor reported Friday.
California posted the highest unemployment level in May since current record-keeping began more than three decades ago, the department said.
Unemployment in California stood at 11.1 percent in April and 6.8 percent in May 2008.
Only four states have a higher unemployment rate than California -- Michigan at 14.1 percent, Oregon at 12.4 percent and Rhode Island and South Carolina, tied at 12.1 percent, according to the Labor Department.
Meanwhile, the California Employment Development Department said the government posted the largest job declines in the month, down by 14,200 jobs.
The job losses affected every other sector besides education and health services, said the department.
