Retailing shares of the London stockmarket came under the cosh on Wednesday after Marks and Spencer surprised the market with news of sliding sales.
M&S shares sank 24.5 percent after it said UK like-for-like sales were down 5.3 percent. The news also hit Next, down 7.9 percent, and Sainsbury's, 6.5 percent lower.
The benchmark FTSE 100 index closed down 53.6 points, or 0.98 percent, at 5,426.30.
Shares in the construction products supplier Wolseley fell 9.0 percent on gloomy news from house builders.
