The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee are convinced that the forthcoming 9th All-Africa Games in Algeria will give some of Zimbabwe''s top athletes a perfect platform to fine-tune themselves for next year''s Olympic Games in China. The 2007 All-Africa Games are scheduled to run from July 11-23 in the Algerian capital Algiers and Zimbabwe will be represented by 91 athletes in 17 disciplines at the continent''s biggest sporting showcase. In Algiers, Zimbabwean athletes will take part in athletics, athletics for disabled, boxing, chess, cycling, table tennis, tennis, taekwondo, rowing, judo, wrestling, karate, shooting, sailing, kick-boxing, women''s basketball and swimming. According to Thursday''s The Herald, ZOC believe that the Algiers Games will give some of the Zimbabwean athletes, who have already qualified for next year''s Olympic Games, a perfect opportunity to gauge their strength before the world''s biggest sporting showpiece. Robert Mutsauki, the ZOC chief executive, said his organisation had given financial assistance to 12 out of the 17 disciplines that are travelling to Algiers to use in their preparations for the All-Africa Games. The 12 beneficiaries of the ZOC financial assistance are also Olympic sporting disciplines -- athletics, swimming, shooting, tennis, cycling, basketball, boxing, judo, rowing, table tennis, taekwondo and wrestling.
