The U.S. Olympic Committee confirmed on Tuesday that champion swimmer Gary Hall Jr., holder of 10 Olympic medals, will participate in the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro.
According to the organizing committee, Hall Jr. will compete in the 50 meters freestyle. In the 2003 Pan Am Games, he ranked third in the contest, which Brazil's Fernando Scherer won. This time, one of his strongest opponents will be a Brazilian too, Cesar Cielo, who ranked fourth in the 100 meters freestyle in Australia's 2007 World Championships. Hall Jr.'s participation in Rio's Games will serve as a kick-off in his practice for the 2008 Olympics. Swimming competitions will take place in the July 16-22 period, at the Maria Lenk Water Sports Arena, especially built for the event. The 32-year-old athlete has won five golds, three silvers and two bronzes in the Olympic Games of Atlanta (1996), Sydney (2000) and Athens (2004). Since 1999, when he found out he had diabetes, he has also been giving lectures to people who suffer with the disease.
