Avianna Chao grabbed Canada's third gold medal of the Pan American Games when she won the women's 10-meter air pistol event with a score of 468.9 points.

Luisa Maida of El Savador was second with 467.9 points, while Kirenia Bello Trujillo of Cuba took the bronze with 467.5.

"This is so very exciting - my heart was jumping out of my body," said Chao, who was born in China. "I tried to stay calm with some deep breathing and just tried to shoot the best that I could."

Earlier, American Jason Turner took the men's 50m pistol title with 650.5 points, followed by his countryman Daryl Szarenski (646.4) and Cuba's Yulio Zorrilla Pelleija (639.0).
