Juan Carlos Dasque of Argentina set a new Pan American Games record to win the gold medal of men's trap shooting at the 15th Pan American Games on Monday in Rio de Janeiro.
The 44-year-old Argentine totaled 138 hits for the title, beating Bret Erickson of the United States by one hit. Giuseppe di Salvatore of Canada finished third at 134.
With the victory, Juan Carlos Dasque qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. "I want to take gradual steps. Right now, I'm not thinking of the Olympic Games. I am really happy for winning my gold medal. It's too early to worry about the Beijing Olympic Games," Dasque said.
Bret Erickson was satisfied with his performance though he missed the chance of winning a slot in the Beijing Olympic Games shooting tournament:"I have trained for 37 years. I dedicate my medal to my father, my wife and my children, because I wouldn't be here if I didn't have their support."
Erickson said he would concentrate on his next target: "I'll keep focusing on my next target. Now I'll take part in American competitions and I'll start training for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing."
