Argentine national soccer team coach Alfio Basile said in a Monday press conference on his return from the Copa America that Brazil "beat us fair and square".
"The only truth is what is real," he said about the team's 3-0 defeat at the hands of Brazil in the final. "Our team used the same tactics as we had been using, but we did not make the connection at key moments."
"The Brazilians on the other hand played well and they killed us on the rebound," he said, accompanied by goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri and defender Javier Zanetti.
Despite the loss, Basile rated the team's performance as positive.
"They beat us fair and square. Brazil, whom everyone had said was on the back foot, came out determined in a way we had not seen until then. Everything went well for them and everything went badly for us," he said, appearing resigned.
Before the final, "the team prepared the same as always. But when two great powers are matched the one that does better wins. They scored a goal in the third minute and then they defeated us."
"I have to keep a cool head. It hurts me and I am unhappy. I thought we would win the final," he said.
