Brazil, United States shine in last day swimming competitions

The swimming meet of the 15th Pan American Games concluded here on Sunday with host Brazil and world swimming powerhouse United States shone again in the swimming pool.

Brazilian Rebeca Gusmao started the day with a gold in the women's 100m freestyle at a time of 55.17 seconds. Venezuelan Arlene Semeco who arrived just behind Rebeca for the silver at 55.78, and leaving Brazilian Flavia Delaroli in the third place with 55.84.

Two Americans stepped on the podium of the day's second final--men's 100m backstroke. Randall Bal won the gold at 53.66, followed by Peter Marshall, who kept the silver with a time of 54.64. Thiago Pereira, who had won six gold medals in the tournament, finished third at 54.75.

The Americans also finished one-two in the women's 200m backstroke through Teresa Crippen at 2:10.57 and Julia Smit at 2:11.18. The bronze medal went to Canadian Liz Wycliffe with 2:13.29.

In the men's 50m freestyle, Brazilian Cesar Cielo got his third gold after clocking 21.84. He had already won the 100m freestyle on July 18, and the 4x100 free style, on July 20.

Cielo's compatriot Nicholas Santos touched home second at 22.18, followed by George Bovell from Trinidad and Tobago in the third place at 22.36.
The United States also won the men's 200m backstroke, the women's 4X100m medley relay and the men's 4x100m medley relay events.

After the seven-day swimming competitions, the United States won 19 out of 32 gold medals while host Brazil took 12 titles thanks to Thiago Pareira's heroic performances which produced six gold, one silver and one bronze medals.
