The first batch of Kenyan contingent to the Ninth All Africa Games in Algiers returned on Monday. Deputy Chief de mission Charles Nyaberi said the second batch is expected back on Tuesday. The first arrivals included Jason Dunford who bagged 8 medals including three gold in the swimming competition, the highest number won by an individual Kenyan at the All Africa games.
Another gold medalist in the contingent was Suleiman Bilali who won a gold medal in boxing and the bronze medalists Joshua Ndere and Daniel Shisia.
"I did my best to play by the coach's instructions and I won gold. I am grateful for all those who supported me throughout the tournament," Bilali told reporters.
Bilali returned along with his boxing teammates and swimming, judo, cycling, chess and table tennis teams.
The east African nation put up a commendable performance at the two-week pan African games which saw it finish in the six position but the games comes to an end on Monday night.
Egypt, the most successful nation in the history of the All Africa Games, was set to retain top position in the continent's biggest sporting event. Egypt was leading with 159 medals, 60 gold, 52 silver and 47 bronze ahead of the host nation which is close behind with 57 gold, 48 silver and 60 bronze, desperate to deliver the ultimate prize and justify the heavy burden of hosting the games.
