Brazilian Yane Marques won the women's modern pentathlon competition with 5.484 points, almost 200 points ahead of Monica Pinette of Canada, at the 15th Pan Am Games on Monday.
Monica totaled 5,288 points for the silver and the bronze medal went to Mickelle Kelly of the United States at 5,252.
"Running was my worst discipline, but everything turned out fine today. I can highlight my participation in fencing, but I did worry about keeping up with the other disciplines. This medal is the outcome of my willingness and dedication. I'm really happy for contributing to the history of Brazilian pentathlon", said Marques.
The modern pentathlon disciplines are contested in only one day as follows: 10m air pistol shooting, fencing, 200m freestyle swimming, horse riding and 3,000m running.
Marques started the day at fifth in shooting, with 1,024 points. The winner of this discipline was Cuban Suaima Garcia. In fencing, the Brazilian was on fire to finish first and collect 1,216 more points. In the same discipline, Canadian Monica Pinette finished second.
With 1,304 points conquered thanks to the second position in swimming, Marques got a good advantage over the other competitors. The 200m freestyle swimming was won by American Sheila Taormina.
After that, Marques only had to keep steady and keep her advantage. In riding, she got 1,032 points, and in the last discipline of the day, running, she finished 10th with 908 more points. It was enough to pick up the gold medal for her.
