Yipsi Moreno of Cuba won the gold medal of the women's hammer throw on the opening day of the athletics competition at the 15th Pan American Games here on Monday.
The Cuban won the title with a throw of 75.20 meters to set a new Pan Am record. The silver medal was taken by her compatriot Arasay Thondike at 68.70. Jennifer Dahlgren of Argentina finished with the bronze medal at 68.37.
However, Moreno was not satisfied with her performance: "I could have competed better. I had two invalid throws, but I didn't give up and I won the competition. I achieved my goal, that was to win this medal."
"I have practiced a lot to succeed in the games, but I wasn't expecting to overcome myself. With today's results, I believe the world record is not as far as I thought. Now I have to train more, " Moreno said.
The world record of 78.61 meters was set by Tayana Lisenko of Russia.
